FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ON BLOCK ISLAND TRANSPORTATION

Do I need to bring my car?

The Island has plenty of taxis, and bikes. Many hotels are within walking/biking distance to the village and the beach. Many people find that they can get around with out one. If you have young children, are staying away from the village, or can’t imagine yourself without a car…. then consider renting one on the island or make your ferry reservations early…

Should I fly or take the ferry?

If you need a car… and don’t plan to rent one out here… flying to Block Island is out. Flying is fast and convenient but a bit harder on the budget. You will have to make that cost/convenience determination yourself. Ferry rates are published… Flights start at about $30 and can cost more for a charter depending where you are coming from.

Do the Airlines or ferries operate in bad weather?

Nope… Call ahead if stormy weather is forecast. If the boat or planes are not running, you might as well stay home and try to reschedule your reservations… Also consider that you might be “trapped” on the Island (briefly) if the ferries or airlines do not run on your planned departure date… Don’t worry, everyone eventually gets home safely.

I have accommodations but could not get a ferry reservation... What can I do?

Booked Ferries are a fact of life for Block Island residents and visitors alike… The Block Island Ferry offers “standby” passage on a first come, first serve basis. Plan on arriving at least an hour before the scheduled ferry departure to get a good position on the standby list.
